Reviewing the weekly newsletter for the Columbia HS families – I was impressed by the variety of Black History Month events and activities scheduled in our towns.There is something for everyone!
The South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is offering a panel discussion on Taking a Closer Look at Reparations on Feb 8 at 7 pm – you can register here. There CCR is also offering BLM trivia on two nights: Thurs., Feb. 17th 7:30 (click here: Thursday Trivia) or Sun Feb 20th at 3 pm (click here: Sunday Trivia)
There are several walk/runs presented by Erasing Essex’s Borders. Runs are 8 am on three Saturdays (Feb 5, 12 & 19) and walks are the same days at 1 pm. Learn more & register here.
Maplewood has several events – you can find them all here. The ones that interest me the most are the are book discussions – Colson Whitehead’s Harlem Shuffle will be discussed virtually on Thurs Feb 10 at 7 pm (register here) and At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop will be discussed virtually on Wed Feb 16 at 7 pm (register here).
There are also amazing free events at the Woodland – a Reggae Soca night with The Verdict on Friday Feb 11th and a viewing of A CNN Film: John Lewis Good Trouble on Friday 2/18 at 7:30 pm.
Finally – I have to highlight another free event dedicated to African American Foodways – at the Durand Hedden House (523 Ridgewood Rd) on Sunday 2/13 from 1-4 pm.
